Garfield, M.D. came up with the idea of providing health care to Los Angeles workers. During 1930, Garfield provided prepaid medical and hospital service plans for construction workers throughput California. In 1945, he created a Permanente plan which would help general public. In 1952, the name was changed to Kaiser, but medical group decided to keep the name Permanente; and the name Kaiser Permanente was born. In 1968, its membership grew to 2 million.
