Dental Insurance >> Dental Plan Actual Payment
How much will the dental plan actually pay for dental treatment?
A dental plan may advertise that it provides benefits
that will cover a certain set percentage of your dental treatment costs,
but be certain to read the fine print of the policy. The methodology by
which a dental
plan determines payment can be fairly convoluted, seemingly always
to benefit the insurance
company selling the plan.
Determine if the percentage is based on the actual cost
of the treatment (the fee charged by the dentist) or else an amount the
dental
insurance company has unilaterally decided that the treatment should
cost. These amounts can be two entirely different things. In many cases
it seems fairly unlikely that an individual could make a judgment as to
what their expenses might be with a dental plan without actually enrolling
in it and utilizing it. If you have either of the following information
sources available to you when evaluating a dental plan make sure you take
advantage of them:
. Is there a deductible that must be met before the insurance
company begins paying benefits for the dental
care you have received? What is it? $25, $50, $100? Is the deductible
per individual or cumulative for your entire family. In most cases you
will find that a dental plan's deductible is an annual one.
. Is there a dollar limit on the total amount of benefits
that the dental insurance
company will pay? Usually these cap limitations run on an annual basis.
For some types of dental treatment (i.e. orthodontic treatment) there
may be a lifetime maximum benefit.
. Is there a clause related to pre-existing conditions?
A dental plan may not provide coverage for some of the types of dental
treatment you had hoped to receive. As an example, it is very common
that a dental plan will not provide benefits to replace a missing tooth
that was extracted before the individual was a member of the plan.
How will you pick the dentist who will give your dental
treatment?
Dental plans will vary greatly in the latitude they allow you when you
choose the dentist who will provide your dental care. As a part of your
evaluation of a dental plan you must decide if the method by which the
providing dentist is selected meets your needs. If you already have a dentist
you may feel that it is of great importance to you to continue receiving
dental care from them. For those persons who do not currently have a dentist,
or are not unwilling to listen to the idea of changing dentists, this
aspect of the dental coverage package may be of less concern.
