Reasons for buying Long-term care
Your personal risk of getting long-term care depends on
many factors. Some of those are whether you are a male or female, how
long you live, your health history and whether you have a spouse or family
member who could provide some of the
health care you will need.
• Longevity: The longer
you live, the more liable it is that you would need long-term care. Those
who live to be 95 years old or older than that are much more likely to
have spent five or more years in a nursing home than those who die in
their mid-80. Much less is known about the use of home care services.
• Your Gender: Women
are normally at a much higher risk of needing to pay for formal long-term
care for quite a few reasons. Women not only have longer life spans
but they often live longer than their spouses. When they need care in
their elder age, there is often no one to care of them at home and they
are more likely to need institutional health care as a result of all these
factors.
• Married or Single:
If you have a spouse at home or any other family members who could provide
care for you are more apt to be able to remain in ones own home when you
need actual care. If family
members are unable to provide you health care, and if you cannot pay
someone to take care of you, then a nursing home may be the only best
option available. The condition that causes you to require long-term care,
and the severity of that condition, might decide whether you could be
cared for at your own home or whether institutional care is the only available
option. For instance, a severe stroke could be so disabling that good
care at home is not possible, or an Alzheimer’s patient may need constant
supervision.
• Health factors: Certain
health conditions, like Alzheimer’s or a stroke, could cause a requirement
for long-term care. If you are aware that certain health conditions run
in your family, you might have a greater risk of needing long-term care
than any other person of the same age and gender. Unfortunately, it might
be that this known health condition can also make you disqualified to
buy this type of health
insurance.
